Kate Rebecca Leach of Essoldo Design began teaching her stunning abstract watercolour and collage classes with us in the Spring of 2025 and has sold out all of her classes ever since. If you haven’t had a chance to come on one of her classes yet, then we totally recommend that you do – her classes are so much fun! Kate will be teaching 3 classes with us between now and the end of the year. 23rd October is Abstract Landscapes, November 20th is Autumn Leaves & Botanicals and we end the year on 18th December with Winter Abstracts.
Join us for a wonderfully creative day exploring the cool, atmospheric colours and subtle beauty of winter through watercolour, pattern and abstract design.
Inspired by crisp winter mornings, frosty landscapes and the beautiful simplicity of nature in midwinter, you’ll learn how to create organic watercolour shapes and layer them together to form your own abstract composition. Kate will guide you through a variety of watercolour techniques, showing you how to blend and build up colour to create soft, atmospheric layers in cool blues, greys and silvery tones.
You’ll then add your own decorative details using inks and delicate touches of metallic, bringing texture, pattern and interest to your painting. You can follow the winter-inspired palette or, if you prefer, choose colours that you love and make the piece completely your own.
Taking inspiration from nature and Kate’s own portfolio of abstract designs and patterns, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experiment and develop your own ideas. The result will be a unique piece of contemporary artwork, full of beautiful colour, texture and detail.
No previous watercolour experience is necessary – just come along, experiment and enjoy a wonderfully creative day.
Kate will provide all the materials that you need but you are also very welcome to bring your own favourite paints or brushes.
Kate Rebecca Leach is an artist and illustrator based in Hertfordshire. Her original artwork and high quality Giclée prints feature creative watercolour techniques and embellished metallic details. Kate founded her business, Essoldo Design, in August 2020 and has sold pieces to over 35 countries across the globe and has successfully licensed her work in the UK, Europe and the USA. Her bestselling book, Creative Abstract Watercolour, was published in Spring 2024 and is now available in 7 languages, and her second, Creative Abstract Mixed Media was published in October 2025.

In this class, you can enjoy a choice of traditional and herbal teas from Chesham-based tea connoisseurs, Two Spoons, as well as both caffeinated and decaf coffee. We have dairy and non-dairy milks to suit every preference, and our homemade cakes are always sourced from good local bakers. We also make sure those who need gluten-free options aren’t left out.
