We first ran a workshop with Jen Roffe back in the very earliest days of Where Inspiration Blooms. In fact it was our very first sell-out class... but then through a number of various different factors (not least covid and us having to leave The Barn) any future collaborations fell by the wayside.
Fast forward to Christmas 2024 and you can imagine how excited we were when we bumped into Jen at festive Craft Market... and we began planning to work together again. 2025 saw 3 sell-out workshops and for 2026 we are delighted to bring you 2 expert-led workshops.
This September, you are warmly invited to join expert calligrapher Jen Roffe for a beautifully creative workshop exploring the timeless art of dip pen and ink calligraphy.
Elegant, mindful and deeply satisfying, pointed pen calligraphy transforms simple words into beautiful works of art. Using a traditional wooden pen holder, pointed nib and rich black ink, you'll discover the quiet pleasure of slowing down and creating graceful letterforms in a welcoming and inspiring environment.
Whether you're hoping to personalise greetings cards, gift tags, place settings, envelopes or treasured keepsakes, this relaxing 2½-hour workshop will take you from holding a dip pen for the very first time to creating beautifully hand-lettered words with confidence.
Modern calligraphy is as much about creativity and self-expression as it is technique. In this immersive workshop, Jen will gently guide you through the foundations of pointed pen calligraphy while encouraging you to develop a style that feels uniquely your own. The workshop is relaxed, friendly and taught at a comfortable pace that is perfectly suited to complete beginners.
Jen will begin by introducing the essential principles of dip pen calligraphy, including posture, paper positioning, pen control, ink loading and pressure techniques.
You'll then move through a carefully guided series of exercises, learning the essential beginner strokes before progressing to both lower and uppercase alphabets. As your confidence grows, you'll practise connecting letters into words and phrases, experimenting with spacing, rhythm, style and expressive flourishes that bring joy and personality to your lettering.
Throughout the workshop there is a strong emphasis on enjoyment, experimentation and creative freedom—learning the traditional rules before discovering how to make your lettering beautifully your own.
Using the techniques you've learned, you'll create your own finished piece of hand-lettered calligraphy on card, ready to frame, display at home or give as a thoughtful handmade gift. Before long, you may find yourself adding beautiful handwritten touches to cards, invitations, gifts and special occasions throughout the year.
All of the materials and equipment you'll need are thoughtfully provided during the session, and you'll also leave with your very own beginner's pointed pen calligraphy kit, allowing you to continue practising long after the workshop has ended.
Your take-home kit includes:
- A personalised name tag
- Wooden pen holder
- Beginner's pointed nib
- Japanese Sumi ink pot
- Stroke guides and practice sheets
- Lower and uppercase cursive alphabet guides
- Lettering templates
- Card and gift tags for future projects
Imagine spending a peaceful afternoon immersed in ink, paper and beautiful lettering, guided by an exceptionally experienced and encouraging teacher. Whether you have a special occasion in mind, would love to personalise gifts and stationery, or are simply curious to experience the wonderfully mindful nature of traditional dip pen calligraphy, this workshop offers a calm, creative and deeply rewarding introduction to this beautiful craft.
