If you’ve landed on this page then a heartfelt thank you from me and welcome to The Wednesday Make Space.
I’d like to invite you to join me on the 1st Wednesday of each month for a very calm evening of making space to simply be creative - in whatever way that looks for you. This is a gentle, open creative session where you bring your own project or simply arrive and see what unfolds.
If you can't make evenings then please do also take a look at our DAYTIME Make Space which happens on the same day but from 9am to 12noon.
We are all acutely aware that creativity is good for our wellbeing but the reality of the situation for most of us is that is it still also incredibly elusive. We often put our to do lists or other people’s needs ahead of our deep longing to create.
It’s my dream that our Wednesday Spaces become a gentle rolling community of like minded folk who want to commit a couple of hours, when they can, to being in their creativity – not in a prescribed way but in a very gentle way that suits them.
For some people that might look like playing with paint, for others the opportunity to complete a much loved yet half finished sewing project or start some weaving or it could even be just a space to come and hand write some letters to friends or some poems just for yourself. It really doesn’t matter what you want to come to create, it’s about making the committed space in your life to actually do it!
I’d really also love this space to be somewhere that you can find inspiration if your desire to be creative is matched with a loud voice in your head that says that at the moment you can’t!
In my own life I know that in my numerous times of grief, overwhelm, anxiety or simply on days when my mind screams ‘what on earth do you want to make that for?’ it’s almost impossible to sit down and be creative… it feels about as likely as me standing up and deciding to run a marathon (and if you know me already you’ll know how likely that is!!!) …but that’s where I think I come in.
Having been a serial, and honestly, quite promiscuous crafter (still struggle with the word artist!) for the last 45 years there aren’t many things I haven’t tried, researched or had a go at at some point. I’ve also spent a fair amount of time battling the knowledge that being creative will make me feel better vs actually getting started.
Each month I will be showing up in the Making Spaces and making something myself. I’ve no idea what, but it’s my commitment to myself and even if no one else comes I will still be there.
We will also have a weekly ‘Inspirational Interlude’, where for about 20 minutes each session you’ll be invited (if you want) to take a pause from your personal project to share in some creative inspiration which I hope will spark some new ideas within you.
It might be whatever I am working on that day so it could be papermaking, embroidery, needlefelting etc or it might be reading some seasonal poems or sharing arty/creative book reviews – what I do know for certain is that it will be rooted in nature, seasonality and sustainability in some way.
For each session the room will be set up with a table for you to work at, delicious hot and cold drinks and homemade snacks on the breakfast bar to sustain you (wine and G&Ts if you fancy), gentle quiet music to inspire, candles or scented oils to create a lovely calm atmosphere.
You will need to bring with you a project that you want to work on or if you have nothing in the way of materials please contact me BEFORE the class so that I can have something ready for you to work with.
Everyone leaves with more than just ideas — you’ll take home the sense of calm, inspiration, and connection to your creativity. This is not a structured workshop where you’re told exactly what to make; it’s a space to show up for yourself, to explore, and to enjoy being creative. And cost-wise, it’s just £20 for the full 2 and a half-hour session (even less if you book all 4) — a little more than a glass of wine or couple of coffees and cake, but so much more nourishing for your mind and imagination.
I find myself cringing these days at the horribly over-used expression ‘me time’ so I won’t use that…but if you’d like to make space for creativity this hibernation season— gently, imperfectly, and in good company — you’d be very welcome to join us.
Simply click the booking button to reserve your place, and we can show up together and see what unfolds.
Finally...you will see that we have now added a 'pay it forward' option. Until such times as we can get this class sponsored/grant funded (which is a work in progress behind the scenes) we ask if you are able that you part pay for someone else's place. There are always members of our community who need crafty activities but for whom cost is an option so if you are able to help us fund a couple of places each session then we can invite people who we know would really benefit from the space. Thank you in advance for your kindess.
