If you’ve landed on this page then a heartfelt thank you from me and welcome to The Wednesday Make Space.
I’d like to invite you to join me for a very calm morning of making space to simply be creative - in whatever way that looks for you. This is a weekly, gentle, open creative session where you bring your own project or simply arrive and see what unfolds.
We are all acutely aware that creativity is good for our mental health and wellbeing but the reality of the situation for most of us is that is it still also incredibly elusive. We often put our to do lists or other people’s needs ahead of our deep longing to create.
It’s my dream that The Wednesday Make Space becomes a gentle rolling community of like minded folk who want to commit a couple of hours, when they can, to being in their creativity – not in a prescribed way but in a very gentle way that suits them.
For some people that might look like playing with paint, for others the opportunity to complete a much loved yet half finished sewing project or start some weaving or it could even be just a space to come and hand write some letters to friends or some poems just for yourself. It really doesn’t matter what you want to come to create, it’s about making the committed space in your life to actually do it!
I’d really also love this space to be somewhere that you can find inspiration if your desire to be creative is matched with a loud voice in your head that says that at the moment you can’t!
In my own life I know that in my numerous times of grief, overwhelm, anxiety or simply on days when my mind screams ‘what on earth do you want to make that for?’ it’s almost impossible to sit down and be creative… it feels about as likely as me standing up and deciding to run a marathon (and if you know me already you’ll know how likely that is!!!) …but that’s where I think I come in.
Having been a serial, and honestly, quite promiscuous crafter (still struggle with the word artist!) for the last 45 years there aren’t many things I haven’t tried, researched or had a go at at some point. I’ve also spent a fair amount of time battling the knowledge that being creative will make me feel better vs actually getting started.
Each week I will be showing up in the Making Space and making something myself. I’ve no idea what, but it’s my commitment to myself and even if no one else comes I will still be there.
I’m also going to lead a weekly ‘Inspirational Interlude’, where for about 20-30 minutes each week you’ll be invited (if you want) to take a pause from your personal project to share in some creative inspiration which I hope will spark some new ideas within you.
It will usually be whatever I am working on that day so it could be papermaking, testing cyanotype printing in weak sunlight/grey skies, needle felting etc but it might be reading some seasonal poems or sharing arty/creative book reviews – what I do know for certain is that it will be rooted in nature, seasonality and sustainability in some way.
Each week the room will be set up with a table for you to work at, delicious hot drinks and homemade snacks on the breakfast bar to sustain you, gentle quiet music to inspire, candles or scented oils to create a lovely calm atmosphere and a limited amount of different materials/tools available if you want to have a try at something new (from my stash at home!).
You can either bring with you a project that you want to work on or just turn up and see how you feel on the day.
This is not one of our usual workshops where you know what you are making. It’s the opportunity to commit some time to yourself to be creative… but more than that, to allow yourself to be held and inspired in a lovely calm space… and cost wise it’s not a huge amount more than a couple of cups of coffee and a slice of homemade cake in a café so even if you come, have a couple of drinks, eat a slice and sit in our little garden doing nothing just looking out at the beautiful views you’ve lost nothing!
I find myself cringing these days at the horribly over-used expression ‘me time’ so I won’t use that…but if you’d like to make space for creativity this year — gently, imperfectly, and in good company — you’d be very welcome to join us.
Simply click the booking button to reserve your place, and we can show up together and see what unfolds.
