All materials included. Suitable for beginners and more experienced artists.
Join us for an inspiring day immersed in the expressive world of acclaimed local abstract artist Amy Huitson, gaining a rare insight into some of the intuitive processes and techniques behind her distinctive contemporary paintings.
Known for her bold use of colour, expressive mark making and beautifully layered compositions, Amy's work has earned her a loyal following across Buckinghamshire. In this exclusive artist-led workshop, Amy invites you into her creative practice, sharing the techniques, thought processes and playful experimentation that allow her paintings to evolve so naturally.
Rather than teaching you to paint like her, Amy will help you discover how to paint more like yourself, to be spontaneous and trust your own intuition and what works for you as you ‘play with mark-making’.
Whether you're picking up a paintbrush for the first time or you're an experienced creative looking to loosen up and work more intuitively, this immersive one-day workshop offers the opportunity to step away from your inner critic and reconnect with your own creative instincts in a relaxed and really encouraging environment.
Hosted by co-founder of Where Inspiration Blooms, Jules Cossins, and held at The Pavilion, surrounded by open countryside and gorgeous natural light, you'll spend the day experimenting with paint, mark making and collage, drawing inspiration from seasonal flowers, the beautiful landscape beyond our windows and, most importantly, your own personal responses to them.
Whilst Jules keeps you hydrated and nourished with delicious home made refreshments, Amy will share the intuitive methods she returns to in her own studio practice, helping you move beyond that fear of a blank white page and any self-doubt and into a feeling of creative freedom.
Throughout the day you'll be encouraged to play and experiment, turning simple marks, splashes, drips, colours and textures into your own personal forms of expression. The day is not about creating the perfect work - it is about discovering what you respond to, enjoying the process and having a lot of fun along the way!
The experience begins with a collaborative mark making exercise on a large shared sheet of paper — a really fun way to learn to let go of perfection and awaken your creativity, whilst getting to know the rest of the group. (don’t worry it won’t be cringey or forced!!).
You'll then develop your own collection of painted and marked papers, exploring colour, layering, texture and composition through a series of guided intuitive exercises with Amy. These expressive studies can become artworks in their own right and displayed together as a contemporary grid or separated into individual pieces.
As your confidence grows, you'll use your favourite papers alongside a selection from Amy's own collection to create your own abstract collage on board. Every finished piece will be entirely individual, reflecting your own creative journey, personal style and the discoveries you've made throughout the day.
The day isn’t just about creating artwork – it’s also an opportunity to understand how professional abstract artists beat the fear of the blank canvas and how to develop your own ideas through experimentation. Amy's thoughtful guidance will help you build confidence in your own creative voice, leaving you with new techniques and ways of working that you can take back home to use in whatever way feels right for you.
During the day you will:
- Experience an authentic artist's studio approach to abstract painting
- Explore intuitive mark making and expressive painting techniques
- Learn how to overcome the fear of the blank page
- Experiment with colour, texture, layering and collage
- Create a collection of 'mini' warm up works
- Create a collection of beautiful painted papers
- Produce your own original abstract collage on board
- Develop confidence, creative freedom and a deeper understanding of your own artistic style
This workshop is an opportunity to spend a day working alongside a professional exhibiting artist, exploring your own creativity in a supportive, inspiring setting and under Amy’s expert guidance.
You'll leave with a really unique piece of original artwork and hopefully a renewed enthusiasm for your own creative practise – whatever that looks like for you .
If you've ever felt there was a more expressive, instinctive artist hiding inside you waiting to emerge, then let this be your invitation to begin that journey!
This class is suitable for absolute beginners, as well as more experienced painters.
AMY HUITSON
'My works are inspired by the natural world and its textures, colours, movement, and shifting light. I work with bold, expressive marks, combining drawing, painting, and mixed media. Through layering and building rich surfaces, I aim to capture the atmosphere of a place or fleeting moment, translating my experience of a place or landscape into expressive paintings. At the heart of my practice is a deep enjoyment of the creative journey finding joy in every step of the exploration. For me, art is as much about the experience of making as it is about the finished piece.'
Amy has a Masters in Fine Art and a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Three Dimensional Crafts. Amy is a member of the Buckinghamshire Arts Society and Bucks Visual Arts.
