This Intro To Wheel Throwing Workshop is specifically for teens (KS3+). We're passionate about the next generation embracing hands-on arts and crafts as an antidote (and mental wellbeing support) to the challenges that the digital generation are constantly facing. With many local schools not offering ceramics, our hope is that this class will inspire some of our children to get started in this brilliantly versatile craft.
Throwing a pot is a lot more complex than the experts make it look on the Great Pottery Throwdown, which is why we steered away from running it as a one-off class for so many years (preferring to run our 3 week course where you can take the wheel home with you to practice in between!).
But back in 2021, after lots of requests we took the plunge and decided to offer a one-off workshop by way of an introduction to enable as many people as possible to try wheel throwing. Your teen may not leave with an amazing piece worthy of being best in show after just the one session, but they WILL get the opportunity to see how throwing a pot feels to you, what's involved and whether they enjoy it enough to leap into ceramics more seriously.
In this really fun hour and a half session, under the expert guidance of co-founder of Where Inspiration Blooms, and expert potter Caroline Oden, your teen will learn the basic skills needed to throw on the wheel, such as clay preparation, centring the clay and pulling up a cylindrical shape (a key part of throwing as this is the basis for most wheel thrown ceramic pieces).
They will be working at their own wheel to have maximum throwing time rather than having to share with other kids they don't know.
Included in the price is also the opportunity to have 1 of their pots that they've made during the class clear glazed and fired. This session will be held in our studio in Holmer Green and limited to a maximum of 8 people to ensure that everyone gets the benefit of Caroline's time and expertise.
Before you book this class please note the following:
- you will need to come and collect your pieces of work at a later date
- sadly we are not able to post pieces of pottery out
- you will be notified on email approximately 4 weeks after your class to let you know that your teen's work is ready for collection
- Pieces will be kept for 4-weeks from this point. After this time they will be disposed of to make room for other people’s work
We very much look forward to welcoming you to The Studio.
