We’re delighted that the wheel of the year has turned, the days are brighter, and the sunshine is finally strong enough for us to bring back one of our most popular seasonal workshops!
Join us for a (hopefully!) sun-filled creative session exploring the magic of cyanotype printing—also known as sun printing, one of the earliest forms of photographic printing. We’ll be working outdoors in the beautiful grounds of our workshop space, The Pavilion in Penn Street, Amersham, making the most of the sunshine while creating striking botanical blueprints.
This workshop will be led by Jules Cossins, co-founder of Where Inspiration Blooms and a passionate cyanotype enthusiast.
We’ll begin by exploring a variety of materials and the different effects they create, before experimenting with a couple of test prints. Once you’ve seen how shapes, shadows and patterns appear in this magical process, you’ll choose your favourite materials to create four A5 cyanotype artworks to take home.
Cyanotypes work wonderfully with objects that allow light to pass through or create interesting silhouettes. Great things to try include:
- transparent objects
- papercut designs and stencils
- lace, crochet or ornate cut-out details
- natural botanicals such as grasses, hedgerow flowers, pressed flowers or even seaweed
The flatter your objects, the crisper and more detailed your silhouettes will be.
To make the most of our time together, we’ll be using pre-prepared cyanotype paper. Normally the light-sensitive solution has to be applied in darkness and left to dry before exposure to sunlight, so we’ll prepare the papers in advance so you can jump straight into the fun part.
If time allows, we may also experiment with creative techniques such as adding water and bubbles to our prints, or dipping finished pieces into green tea washes to subtly shift the colour tones.
Each participant will have the opportunity to create up to four A5 prints, including a test piece. You’re very welcome to bring along objects you’d like to print with, but we’ll also have plenty of interesting materials for you to choose from.
Because cyanotype printing relies on sunlight, the workshop is weather-dependent. Light cloud is absolutely fine, but if heavy rain is forecast we’ll either offer you a full refund or move the session to another date. If the weather looks unsuitable, we’ll contact you 24 hours before the class.
At Where Inspiration Blooms, we’re big fans of delicious cake! In this class, you can enjoy a choice of traditional and herbal teas from Chesham-based tea connoisseurs, Two Spoons, as well as both caffeinated and decaf coffee. We have dairy and non-dairy milks to suit every preference, and our homemade cakes are always sourced from good local bakers. We also make sure those who need gluten-free options aren’t left out.
Please note that we will only be able to run this class/course if we have a minimum of 5 guests. All of our teachers are highly skilled in their fields, but being an artist isn't always a well paid profession so we hope you understand why it's important that we ensure that our teachers can afford to run each of their classes. Should the class not be able to go ahead we will contact you no less than 2 weeks before it is due to start and we will of course, offer you a full refund.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our email julesandcaroline@whereinspirationblooms.co.uk
Thank you so much for booking onto one of our workshops — we’re really looking forward to welcoming you and hope you find your class to be a space where your inspiration can really bloom 😉
