We’re delighted to welcome back Ross Haynes, whose day-to-day role is running the beautiful and highly productive Walled Garden at the neighbouring Penn Estate. With many years of experience growing a wide range of vegetables for the Estate, Ross brings expert, practical knowledge that’s perfectly suited to home growers.
In this 3-hour, hands-on workshop you’ll gain a clear and practical understanding of how to grow delicious, nutritious vegetables by early summer — even if you’re starting from scratch or only have a very small growing space. The session is designed to build confidence and give you the skills to get growing straight away, using simple, achievable methods.
The workshop begins at The Pavilion with a cup of tea and homemade cake, while Ross introduces the basics of successful vegetable growing and shares what seeds he is sowing now, both with and without a heated propagator. For complete beginners, simple windowsill growing methods will be covered, so there’s no need to worry about having specialist equipment. You’ll also have the chance to get hands-on with sowing seeds and potting on young plants.
Once your own vegetables are underway, we’ll take a short but scenic walk (less than ten minutes) across the adjacent field and through the Estate’s private woodland to the Walled Garden. Here, Ross will demonstrate how to prepare a seed bed, what to add to the soil for maximum productivity, how he cares for his soil, and share practical gardening tips and tricks, including the no-dig method. We’ll also look at sowing seeds directly into the soil.
Spending time in the Walled Garden gives us the opportunity to explore the established vegetable beds, talk about the overwintered crops that have supplied the Estate for many years, and discuss what Ross is growing this season, including reliable varieties to look out for at home.
Back at The Pavilion, we’ll turn our attention to growing in limited space and how to maximise your vegetable patch so it stays productive throughout the year. To finish, you’ll create your own personalised ‘Grow Your Own’ plan, focusing on your five must-have plants. Ross will support you with what to plant, when to plant it, and how to make it work best in your space.
This workshop is ideal for complete beginners, gardeners returning to vegetable growing, and anyone who wants to make better use of their growing space. It offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, expert guidance, and plenty of practical takeaways to help you grow with confidence.
Everyone will leave with some freshly planted seeds and a handful of plants that have been ‘potted on’ during the workshop, along with plenty of new ideas, tips, and tricks to try at home. We recommend bringing a pair of gardening gloves if you’d like to keep your hands clean, an apron to protect your clothes if you wish, and a tray to carry your pots or modules home, as they will have been watered and may still be a little damp.
Ross will also be running a cut flower growing workshop this spring, so keep an eye on our website for details or drop us an email to be among the first to hear about that class.
At Where Inspiration Blooms, we’re big fans of delicious cake! In this class, you can enjoy a choice of traditional and herbal teas from Chesham-based tea connoisseurs, Two Spoons, as well as both caffeinated and decaf coffee. We have dairy and non-dairy milks to suit every preference, and our homemade cakes are always sourced from good local bakers. We also make sure those who need gluten-free options aren’t left out.
Please note that we will only be able to run this class/course if we have a minimum of 5 guests. All of our teachers are highly skilled in their fields, but being an artist isn't always a well paid profession so we hope you understand why it's important that we ensure that our teachers can afford to run each of their classes. Should the class not be able to go ahead we will contact you no less than 2 weeks before it is due to start and we will of course, offer you a full refund.
If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact us via our email julesandcaroline@whereinspirationblooms.co.uk or call Jules on 07710 474699
Thank you so much for booking onto one of our workshops — we’re really looking forward to welcoming you and hope you find your class to be a space where your inspiration can really bloom 😉
