Day 1 (Saturday 4th July 10am-4pm) - Building the Base (FREE)
Day 2 (Saturday 11th July, 10am – 4pm) - Building the Cob (£70)
The cost of this workshop is £70 per family/group/pairing for Day 2. You are welcome to come along to Day 1 for free. You are also welcome to simply attend Day 2 if you can't make both days.
Looks like we will all be spending a LOT more time in our gardens this summer so we thought that this workshop could be an enormously fun addition to make outdoor food more fun!
Join us for either 1 or 2 days of this outdoor oven building course, where you will learn how to make a traditional cob oven with a reclaimed brick and flint base, and a cob top.
On Day 1 we will learn how to construct a solid base from brick and on Day 2 we will be getting messy with clay building the actual cob oven.
This is a unique opportunity to learn how to build a cob oven for your garden - a real must for us all now that we will be spending more of our time at home over the summer than we had planned.
Outdoors and socially distancing in accordance with government guidelines, the group will collectively build a beautiful, functional oven made from reclaimed materials and clay dug up from the grounds of The Barn.
No experience or skills are required, just an enthusiasm for making things and willing hands! Our workshop tutor Guy has always been passionate about crafting the traditional way. Over the last few years, he has made a number of cob ovens with different groups and is delighted to be able to pass on his skills and learnings to those who are equally passionate about outdoor living.
On the first Saturday we will focus on making the fire brick base, ensuring it is carefully levelled and insulated using the right materials. Please ensure that you are wearing sturdy shoes on this day as we will be moving bricks around! We will then start the top cob oven, which will be completed during the 2nd Saturday.
Cob is an earthen building material that is made of clay, sand, straw and water, and the best way to make it is to take your shoes and socks off and stomp about in it with your bare feet. There will be feet washing facilities available, but it you might want to bring a towel and a change of clothes. Shorts and flip-flops are the ideal clothing to wear for this activity.
You will leave with all the skills, tips and techniques to be able to go home and build your own oven. The cost for this jam-packed 2-day course is £70 per person. Please bring your own lunch.
Simply email email@example.com for more info.
Guy also runs sourdough bread making courses at his country home in Bovingdon, where he teaches groups how to make real, slow fermented dough in the traditional way. He has also run pizza parties for kids.
As always please do get in touch if you have any questions at all, we very much look forward to welcoming you up to The Barn.
