Artful Mending Workshop - 17th July

Saturday 17th July 10am-12noon

Join us for this brand-new workshop with fabulous local business, The Artful Menders.

During this hugely informative session you will learn about the circular economy and the importance of slow fashion and reusing, repurposing and repairing clothing. The Artful Menders will demonstrate some hand sewn mending techniques including sewing on buttons, repairing seams and some examples of darning and visible mending.  There will also be an introduction to Sashiko, the Japanese embroidery technique of stitching to reinforce worn fabric.

The class will be limited to 5 people so there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-2-1 tuition and to ask loads of questions.

The Artful Menders will provide all the materials you will need to work with including yarns, needle and thread and material to practice on (they can even provide socks to darn should you need them!!) - but you are very welcome to bring in some small items with you for extra guidance.

You will also be introduced to materials and tools that they would recommend for you to be an expert mender in future.

The Artful Menders were born out of a desire to build a more sustainable approach to fashion by repairing and re-purposing well-loved garments, to give them a new lease of life and stop them being thrown away into landfill.

Co-founders Cathy and Emma, alter, mend and up-cycle clothing to refresh a wardrobe or turn pre-loved clothes into keepsakes like cushions or blankets. They do this through traditional mending like sewing & darning and a technique called ‘visible mending’ – it doesn’t hide the fact the garment has been mended- It highlights it, celebrates it, tells its story.
